Course Description and Credit Hours

Advanced writing course exploring composition with images, sound, video, and other media while considering theoretical perspectives on rhetorical concepts such as authorship, audience, process, revision, and design.

Course Objectives

How often do you stop to think about the medium in which you are communicating? How does a specific medium change the way you write? What does it mean to “read” an image? How does our use of technology shape the way we communicate? What theories inform our relationships with media? In this class, we will explore the intersections between various media: print, film, images, sound, social media, etc. We will develop an approach for understanding and composing multimedia products while attempting to identify (and challenge) the implicit conventions of media. Along the way, we will consider the ways writing (as an object and as a practice) is shaped by these multimedia interactions from both theoretical and practical perspectives. By integrating practical activities with broader theoretical issues, we will work on developing effective strategies for designing multimedia presentations, and through this class, you will create image, audio, remix, and interactive projects.

Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, you should have successfully met the following outcomes: 

  • Effectively define, read, and produce multimedia texts.

  • Understand new media theories, including (but not limited to) topics such as process, authorship, affect, design, and multimodality.

  • Engage in informed discussion about new media theory, products, and processes. 

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of media production tools and software.

  • Create and disseminate information in a multimedia environment.

Outline of Topics

There are five major projects in this course, including the final project.  Each one will involve composing in different media, and the due dates for each are listed on the course calendar.  Along with every major project, you will be required to write a reflective essay examining your compositional process and considering some of the related theory from the readings. Also, you will be required to present your work to the class and this presentation will count for a portion of your project grade. Specific details for these will be included in the project prompts and rubrics.

Your final course grade will be determined by your successful completion of the assignments described above. Final course grades will be awarded:

A+ = 98-100

A = 94-97

A- = 93-90

B+ = 87-89

B = 86-84

B- = 83-80

C+ = 77-79

C = 74-76

C-= 73-70

D+= 69-67

D = 66-64

D-= 63-60 

F = 59 or below

Policy on Missed Exams and Coursework

Daily grades can not be made-up. Major assignments can be made-up at the instructor's discretion. Late assignments will be penalized 10 points per day late.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is important to the success of this class and to your development as a writer.  I expect you to come to each class prepared and ready to participate, having completed all required readings and assignments. Failure to attend any required individual conferences scheduled in lieu of class will result in a class absence.  Because of the collaborative nature of the class, it is difficult to make up missed work—especially during peer review days.  If chronic lack of preparation, lateness, or absence becomes a problem, I will lower your class engagement grade by one full letter. (Chronic absence= more than 3 absences).  Students who miss 20% of the course (6 absences) will normally receive a failing grade. Please note that I do not make a distinction between excused and unexcused absences.  In the event of a family emergency, serious illness, or other situation, speak with me as soon as possible.

In such instances, the instructor will notify students in class and/or via email and will endeavor to provide reasonable time for students to adjust to any changes.
