Course Description

Course Description and Credit Hours

A study of the principles and practices of intercultural business communication, written and personal. The course requires substantial reading. The focus is on making students aware of the sources of common intercultural business communication problems, and on helping them develop strategies to avoid or correct these problems.

Students develop a broad skill set that strengthens their ability to identify the critical questions surrounding the challenges of intercultural business communications. Through lectures,readings and practical experience, students gain exposure to global issues that will affect them in any field when working within international environment. The course requires substantial reading. The focus is on making students aware of the sources of common intercultural business communication problems, and on helping they develop strategies to avoid or correct these problems.

Grading Policy

Grade ranges:   97-100 = A+; 93–96 = A;   90‐92 = A‐  ; 87‐89 = B+; 83–86 = B; 80-82 = B-; 77-79 = C+; 73‐76 = C; 70-72 = C-; 60‐69 = D; Below 60 = F.

 The instructor will post grades online as they come available. Grades will be weighted as specified below and summed to calculate your final grade.

X-Culture project improves cultural intelligence, international and virtual collaboration competencies, global self-efficacy, and increases interest in cross-cultural interactions.

All students receive X-Culture Global Collaboration Experience Certificates and the members of the best teams receive Best Team awards ($1,000 per team, contingent upon funding availability).


-          YOUR - Readiness test, Weekly Reports & Post-Project Survey – 20%

-          Peer Evaluation Starting on Milestone 3 – 40%

-          Quality of the team report - Summary at the end of the Project 40%

Basic Information:

-          Every semester, X-Culture connect about 4,500 students from 100 universities in 40 countries

-          Put them in global virtual teams (5-8 students, each from a different country)

-          For about two months, they work together on business projects presented by our corporate partners

-          Students learn the challenges and best practices of cross-cultural virtual collaboration

Exams - 30%

The class has three exams. Two in the middle of the semester each (10%) and the final exam (10%). The final exam date is determined by the University.

International Interview- 5%

The students will interview two foreigners. The interview questions will be prepared in class.

PackBack - 15%

Every week the student should post ONE question and answer TWO from the classmates. The due date for the activity is every Sunday at midnight. The question should be related to the chapter scheduled for the following week. Every post is worth 100 pts. Each element: 1 question and 2 answers will have the same weight. If a Student create more than one question, that will help his/her participation grade.

Please Follow this rules:

  1. When post questions or answers, the minimum value for the Curiosity Points is 50. Less than that, question or answers will not count for that week.

  2. Every time you post, please start your question or answer with the chapter assigned that week. For instance if the post is related to chapter 3, your question and answers should start as CH3 - xxxxxxxx xxxx ?

  3. There are four weeks where we do not have a chapter scheduled. Those weeks will have special postings called CULTURAL FACTS. Please start your question or answers with CF1 - xxxxxx ? or CF2 - xxxxxx ? , etc.

  4. If you missed to post any week, you will get zero on that specific week. No option to post late, only under exceptional circumstances beyond the control of the student (death in a family or illness) supported by documentary evidence (like a doctor’s note) the grade of that post will be ignored.

  5. At the end of the semester the best three scores in Curiosity Points will get extra points in participation.

The Culture Map Book - 15%

The Culture Map book by Erin Meyer is a book the students need to read during the semester. The book presents examples of Multinational Communication in different cultures around the world. It is an enjoyable book that supports the theoretical knowledge with vivid examples in business environments. There are five deliverables of two chapters every time.

Class Participation 10%

The participation grade will depend on the following:

  • Attending class - If sick, attenting is encouraged by zoom.

  • Completing assignments on time.

  • After complete small homework, participating in class, e.g., asking questions, offering comments, sharing experiences

  • Bring International Cultural News to class

  • Participation is always the difference between + or - on your final grade.

Policy on Missed Exams and Coursework

A missed exam or assignment will be assigned a grade of zero. As a rule exams must be taken on the scheduled dates and no make-up quizzes/exams will be provided. Only under exceptional circumstances beyond the control of the student (death in a family or illness) supported by documentary evidence (like a doctor’s note) will a make-up exam be prepared. The make-up exam will be different from the regular examination and the student needs to see the instructor for the scope and nature of the exam.

Attendance Policy

Attendance is REQUIRED.  I will call or sign up roster every class.  However, your grade depends on more than just showing up. Class participation grades are based on the instructor's assessment of the student’s in‐class contribution to discussions. In addition, due to the volume of information I will perform random activities to add credit to the class participation.  Voluntary participation in discussion of lecture or case issues is an important part of this process and an important part of your participation grade. Please raise your hand to obtain recognition before speaking. A thoughtful reading of assigned chapters before class should be sufficient to handle these discussions. Leaving class.  Any student who leaves the classroom before class is dismissed is considered absent.

The instructor will make every effort to follow the guidelines of this syllabus as listed; however, the instructor reserves the right to amend this document as the need arises. In such instances, the instructor will notify students in class and/or via email and will endeavor to provide reasonable time for students to adjust to any changes.
